PROGRAM NOTES
A traditional lullaby dating to the mid-19th century (possibly earlier), its somber melody and lyrics reflects a deeply melancholy story. This traditional American song traces its roots to an era when households were cared for by slaves; when this song would have been a lullaby sung by slaves caring for babies, forced to ignore their own children’s care. In this song, the caretaker promises “all the pretty little horses” (and other affects of the good life) knowing she cannot be their for her child, nor can she give these gifts.
